Math (Saxon)
- Daily Math meeting (counting, time, money, calendar, graphing
and problem solving)
- Daily timed tests (addition, subtraction and multiplication
- Assessments every 5 lessons
- Oral assessments every 10 lessons
Reading/Language (Metra Companion Reading and Harcourt Brace)
- Metra Companion Reading
- Daily phonetic practice
- Daily writing exercises uses sentence structure and grammar
exercises
- Harcourt Brace
- Selections are excerpts from children's literature books
- Vocabulary, comprehension questions and story maps are part
of every story
- Various writing activities go along with the stories
Spelling (Metra Companion Reading)
- Pre-test on Monday
- Post test on Friday
- Words used focus on high frequency words that are used in
children's writing
- Children are expected to spell these words correctly in
their daily writing
Social Studies (Silver Burdett Ginn)

Science (Harcourt Brace)
- Many hands-on activities and experiments
- Units include
- Dinosaurs
- Science in the kitchen (matter)
- Eco-systems
- Energy (light and sound)
- Our class makes a project for the Science Fair in March
Handwriting (Zaner-Bloser)
- Manuscript writing is practiced the 1st half of the year
- Cursive writing is introduced the 2nd half of the year
Art
- Variety of mediums and activities
Homework
Expectations for 2nd Grade
- Children are expected to read at least 15 minutes a day, 5
days a week
- Homework in math and companion reading, 3-4 times a week
- Practice math facts 2-3 times a week
- Practice spelling words Monday-Thursday
Children should be able to do their homework independently, but
checked over and directed by parents.
Supply List
- 1 Fiskars scissors
- 2 Elmer's white glue (4 oz. bottles)
- 2 boxes of #2 pencils
- 1 box of crayons (at least 16 count)
- 1 spiral notebook - wide lined (70 sheet)
- 1 8-count package of thin, original color markers
- 1 8-count package of wide, original color markers
- 2 boxes of Kleenex
- 4 2-pocket folders (one red and one green)
- 1 set of colored pencils
- 1 highlighter (med tip, not wide)
- 1 large eraser
- 1 box to hold markers and crayons (8 1/2 x 5)
- 2 packages of erasers for the top of pencils
- 2 glue sticks
- 1 small file box with dividers - can use the same on from 1st grade
- money for math (in 4 small zip-lock bags - one per denomination): 20 pennies, 10
dimes, 8 nickels, 6 quarters
- 2 boxes of snack crackers (goldfish, Ritz, Cheez-its, graham crackers, etc..) -
no cookies please
- 1 box of baby wipes
Please label all items with child's name.
It is a good idea to buy extra supplies during the Back-To-School
Sales (pencils, markers, etc.)
You may drop off any of the supplies in front of the second grade
classroom during the Parent Welcome Back Night in August.
