Curriculum

Religion (Harcourt)

  • Call to Faith
  • Planning and participating masses throughout the year
  • Covers 7 main topics including Sacraments, The Kingdom of God, Morality, The Church, Jesus Christ, The Trinity, and Revelation.
  • Respect and love for creation is incorporated into all subject matter.
Math (Saxon)
  • Daily timed tests on fact families using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Daily worksheet used to enhance knowledge of skills taught
  • Assessments of skills every 5 lessons
  • Fractions, types of angles, roman numerals, negative numbers, counting money, graphing, temperature, square roots, long division.
Phonics and Spelling (Saxon)
  • A maintenance program reinforcing skills from K-2 grade.
  • Uses critical encoding and decoding skills to allow students to read numerous words.
  • Review concepts such as schwa, sight words, final stable syllables, diagraphs, and prefixes and suffixes.
  • Weekly pre-tests are given and then corrected by the students. Final tests are given on Fridays. Words are chosen from a list of high frequency words that coincide with the weekly lesson.
  • Reading fluency and comprehension are emphasized.
Vocabulary (Vocabulary for Achievement)
  • Words are selected based on high frequency, concepts covered, and ability to expand upon and acquire more sophisticated words.
  • Weekly lessons are completed
  • Assessment of skills every 5 lessons
  • Words are used in daily writing assignments.
Language Arts (Metra Companion Reading and Harcourt Brace)
  • Reading selections are whole pieces of literature and excerpts from stories.
  • Story maps, graphic organizers, comprehension questions, and vocabulary are covered.
  • Activity sheets are completed with each story emphasizing skills covered
  • 2 chapter books are read as a class: Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Fantastic Mr. Fox.
  • Kinds of sentences, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, and mechanics are taught.
  • Writing as a process in many forms such as prewriting, editing, revising, and publishing.
Social Studies (Harcourt Brace)
  • Comparing Communities
  • Current Events
  • How time changes our communities.
  • Levels of government such as executive, legislative, judicial and their internal components.
  • Inventors and how businesses work.
Science (Harcourt Brace)
  • Concepts covered include weather, forces, magnets, and types of machines.
  • Experiments are used to enhance topics being taught.
Handwriting (Zaner-Bloser)
  • Refine manuscript writing.
  • Cursive letters are taught.
  • Neatness is expected on all assignments.
Art
  • Warm and cool colors
  • Different mediums are used including paint, chalk and oil pastels, and clay.
  • A variety of projects that enhance creative skills.



Homework Expectations
  • Math assignments will be completed
  • Math facts are practiced
  • 20 minutes of reading is completed
  • Spelling words are practiced
  • Phonics packets are completed once a week
  • Metra packets are completed weekly
  • Decodable readers are read 3 times a week
  • Other projects as assigned throughout the year


Supply List
  • 2 boxes of #2 pencils (no mechanical, Color Barrel or Roseart - they break!)
  • 1 hand held pencil sharapener with a cover
  • 6 pens of any color
  • 3 spiral notebooks (wide lined, 70 sheets)
  • 1 Fiskars scissors - medium size
  • 1 box of crayons
  • 1 box of colored pencils (at least 24 count, they are used for drawing)
  • 1 box of markers (Classic colors required, other colors optional)
  • 1 box of "skinny" dry erase markers
  • Large pink eraser
  • 1 pkg pencil top erasers
  • 1 pencil box - small 8x5 size (larger ones will be provided for students)
  • 4 2-pocket folders (Laminated and durable)
  • 2 2-pocket folders (plastic)
  • 1 large bottle of glue and a large fat glue stick
  • 1 pair of tennis shoes for gym
  • 3 boxes or bags of family sized snacks to be shared (eg. pretzels, crackers, goldfish, animal crackers) - no cookies please
  • 1 package of watercolors
  • 1 water bottle
  • 2 highlighters, any color
  • 1 package baby wipes
  • 1 package wide lined loose leaf paper
  • 1 inch three ring binder
  • 1 box of Kleenex
  • 1 assignment notebook for each semester to be purchased at school (The cost per book is $3.50 for a total of $7.00.  This money should be sent in an envelope marked with the child's name on the first day of school.)

    PLEASE LABEL ALL SUPPLIES - THAT INCLUDES EVERY PENCIL AND MARKER! (For your convenience, we suggest you use computer style labels to do this).

    It is a good idea to purchase extra supplies at the beginning of the school year when the supply is great and the prices are low.  Students run out and lose supplies, so they will need to be replaced.
